THE SONGS AND SONNETS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

First edition, first printing. Original red cloth with lettering and ornaments in gilt to the spine, blind-stamped decorations to front and rear panels, decorative endpapers. Twelve tipped-in colour illustrations, with two-tone illustrations and decorations throughout, each page opening with an illuminated initial letter. An unusually clean and bright copy, the binding tight and square with some pushing to the tips of the lightly faded spine. There are a few light marks to a handful of pages, and one page (p. 197) is a little frayed and soiled to the lower right corner. All twelve colour illustrations are present, bright and safely behind their captioned tissue guards. Previous owner's name lightly written in pencil to the verso of the half-title, otherwise without inscriptions. A lovely copy.

A collection containing songs from the the plays along with most of the sonnets, generously illustrated throughout by Charles Robinson (1870-1937).
