Uncorrected proof copy of the first edition, first printing. Publisher's original red matte paper-covered boards with white titles to the spine. Illustrated throughout in colour by Quentin Blake. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, with some rubbing to the edges, two short closed tears and a small sticker to the bottom of the spine. The contents, with the publisher's 'Proof Copy Only' ink stamp to the front endpaper and a light mark to the margin of the first page, are otherwise clean throughout.

The proof binding varies significantly from the published first edition, which has laminated boards, white upper board with a green border and green lower board, titles in black and illustrations framed rectangularly rather than oval. Uncommon in proof state.
