THE WHITSUN WEDDINGS

First edition, first printing. Original purple cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in dustwrapper. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth and gilt bright and clean. Previous owner's name and date ("Robert Preyer / May, 1964"; Preyer (1922-2019) was Professor of English at Brandeis University) written neatly in blue ink to the upper edge of the front free endpaper. The contents are otherwise clean and bright throughout. Complete with the neatly price-clipped first-state dustwrapper, lightly rubbed and nicked to spine tips and corners. There is a closed tear (c. 4 cm) along the rear fold where the spine meets the rear panel, and a few light stains to the rear. Altogether, a very attractive example.

One of the great works of post-war British poetry and the first volume of Larkin's poetry to be published by Faber and Faber (his second novel, 'A Girl in Winter', was published by them in 1947). The following year, the author was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry and an Arts Council prize for "the best book of original English verse by a living poet published from July 1962 to June 1965". Published on 28 February 1964, 3910 copies of the first impression were issued. (Bloomfield A7).
