First edition, first printing. Publisher's original first state yellow cloth with gilt titles on green to the spine, in the magnificent John Minton illustrated dustwrapper. With eight full page colour lithograph plates, 42 full-page black and white plates, and 39 further small black and white drawings within the text by John Minton. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing at the extremities, the cloth with a few very light marks is otherwise bright and fresh. The contents with faint spotting to the prelims and closed text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the near fine lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that remains exceptionally clean and bright and without loss or large tears. Not price-clipped (21s net to the lower front flap).
An exceptionally attractive example of this notoriously fragile dustwrapper, the book in the scarce first state binding.
