First edition, first printing. Publisher's original second state yellow cloth with green titles to the spine, in the John Minton illustrated dustwrapper. Illustrated with eight full page colour lithograph plates, 42 full-page black and white plates, and 39 further small black and white drawings within the text by John Minton. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping at the spine tips and rubbing at the extremities, the cloth with a few light marks to the lower board is otherwise bright and fresh. The contents, with a small inscription to the front endpaper and spotting to the prelims and closed text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that has several tears without loss, a few old tape repairs to the underside and some toning to the spine and panel edges.
