First edition, first printing. Original [first state] blue cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated map front endpapers, with twelve illustrations and a genealogical table. A near fine copy, the cloth and gilt bright, the binding square and firm, the contents, except for some very light spotting, predominantly to prelims and early pages, are clean without inscriptions or stamps. Page block edges lightly spotted; lower edges untrimmed. Lower corners are lightly rubbed and a touch bumped, the spine tips softened. Loosely laid in to this copy is a bright clean copy of Methuen's New Books catalogue for Spring, 1927. The dustwrapper, lightly rubbed to edges, tips and folds, nicked to corners, and with a small mark to the upper edge of the front panel, is otherwise in very good shape indeed. Not price-clipped (10/6 net printed to the spine). An attractive copy of the first-state, blue cloth binding.
The third of Forester's sporadic works of (non-fiction) history, 'Victor Emmanuel II' is an account of the history of Italy, from the Congress of Vienna to the rise of Mussolini.
