First edition, first printing. Original green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in the dustwrapper designed by Michael Harvey. Top edge green. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm. There is a neat previous owner's name written in ink to the top right corner of the front free endpaper; the contents are otherwise clean and bright. Complete with the near fine dustwrapper, which shows some minor fading (visible to the yellow typeface used for the title). Not price-clipped (£6.95 net to the front flap). A lovely copy.
A sequel to Greene's earlier 'fragment of autobiography', 'A Sort of Life' (1971), 'Ways of Escape' fuses the introductions that the author provided to individual volumes of the 'Collected Edition' of his works with a series of essays "on episodes in my life and on some of the troubled places in the world where I have found myself involved for no good reason, though I can see now that my travels, as much as the act of writing, were ways of escape..."
