First edition, first printing, [first state]. Publisher's original green cloth with titles and decoration in black to the upper board and in gilt and black to the spine. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with some rubbing to the extremities, bumping and minor fraying to the tips of the slightly darkened spine. The rear board has a rectangular patch where the cloth is a touch lighter, possibly from a historic removed label. The contents are spotted to the prelims and margins throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. The publisher's first state catalogue running to 32 pages and dated October 1902 (listing this book as 'in the press') to the rear.
Published 13 November 1902 in an edition of 3150 copies (including colonial copies). The collection, comprising three novellas, is notable for the first appearance in book form of Conrad's masterpiece 'Heart of Darkness'.
