THE ACACIA TREE, ROBINIA PSEUDO ACACIA: Its Growth, Qualities, and Uses. With Observations on Planting, Manuring, and Pruning.

First edition. Signed and inscribed by the author to Thomas Davies Esq to the head of the title page. Publisher's original green cloth with titles in gilt to the spine. Some pages uncut. A very good copy, the binding firm with cracking to the rear hinge, a small split to the cloth to the right of the head of the spine, and mottling to the boards. The contents with toning and occasional foxing are otherwise clean throughout.

An influential work designed in part to encourage the continued growth of the British domestic timber trade. Among the earliest North American trees sent back to Britain, the acacia, or locust tree, was largely used for ornamental purposes. In this work, Withers provides an overview of previous writings on the tree, extracting from Evelyn, Michaux and others, and gives instructions on its cultivation, management, and use, arguing that the quality of its wood coupled with its rapid growth would make it the ideal tree for a profitable timber market. Very uncommon signed. Provenance: From the library of Martin Stone.
