First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Publisher's original black cloth boards and gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with four pages of black and white photographs. A better than very good copy, the binding firm and square with bumping to the spine ends and corners. The contents, with some very light toning to the endpapers are otherwise clean throughout and free from inscriptions or stamps. Foxing to the top edge of the text block and a little to the fore-edge. Complete with the rubbed, creased, nicked and lightly toned dustwrapper, that has a short closed tear to the top left of the front panel. Price clipped to the front flap.
Signed by the author in blue ink to the front endpaper "With my compliments, / P Vanezis / 3. 2. 78". The second book in Dr Vanezis's trilogy about Makarios. A study of the history of Cyprus, which was under British control from 1878, the rise of 'enosis' in which the Greek Cypriots wanted an end to British rule and union with Greece. Makarios, who was Archbishop of the Cypriot Orthodox Church, was a leader in the campaign for 'enosis' and in 1960 became the first President of Cyprus. Scarce in signed state.
