SCENES IN AFRICA For the Amusement and Instruction of Little Tarry-At-Home Travellers.

Fourth edition. Publisher's original quarter roan over printed paper-covered boards. Illustrated with one folding map and 84 engravings across 28 plates (complete). A very good copy, the binding firm with rubbing to the boards and wear to the extremities, including loss to the lower corner of the upper board. The contents with a contemporary ink ownership stamp and signature to the head of the title page, a tear to the bottom of one plate (affecting one image), a little foxing to the map, offsetting from some of the plates to the facing text pages, and occasional spotting to page edges, are otherwise in good order. An excellent example.

A journey through Africa designed for a young audience describing the lives and customs of different nations and reflecting the impact of colonisation. Illustrated with a wonderful series of engravings depicting everything from traditional costumes, to ferocious crocodiles and Egyptian tombs. The book pays particular attention to the slave trade, narrating its atrocities so 'that every little boy and girl may grow up' to regard it with 'horror'.
