Mixed editions. 12 volumes across 23 books, plus 8 volumes of plates. Publisher's original maroon cloth with titles in gilt to the spines, in dustwrappers. Top edges variably in gilt, red-stain and plain. Illustrated with black and white photographs, in-text figures and numerous maps (many folding). A near fine set, seemingly unread. The bindings square and tight, the contents clean and crisp throughout. One volume with a previous owner's inscription to the front pastdown (hidden by the flap of the dustwrapper), another with a minor splash mark to the fore-edge. The plates and maps remain wonderfully fresh. Complete with the near fine dustwrappers, a few with a little marking (more so to one of the plate volumes), a touch of fading to a couple of spine panels, and the odd minor nick or crease. The majority not price-clipped (eight are clipped). An excellent group.

An extensive range of volumes from this monumental publication, spanning both the first and second (re-written) series, in unusually fine condition. The first series, consisting of 12 volumes, was originally published between 1924 and 1939. The second series, forming a complete overhaul of the previous text, was published between 1970 and 2005, ultimately being composed of 14 volumes in 19 books. Although not forming a complete set of either issue, the present group still provides a comprehensive history of the ancient world from prehistory to c. A.D. 324, often containing the same (although re-written) volumes from each series, hence there being two different versions of volume III, IV, V, etc. The present set is composed of: Vol. I, Part 1 (second series): Prolegomena and Prehistory; Vol. I, Part 2 (second series): Early History of the Middle East; Vol. II, Part 1 (second series): The Middle East and the Aegean Region c.1800-1380 B.C.; Vol. II, Part 2 (second series): The Middle East and the Aegean Region c.1380-1000 B.C.; Vol. III (first series): The Assyrian Empire; Vol. III, Part 1 (second series): The Prehistory of the Balkans, the Middle East and the Aegean World, Tenth to Eighth Centuries B.C.; Vol. III, Part 2 (second series): The Assyrian and Babylonian Empires and Other States of the Near East, from the Eighth to the Sixth Centuries B.C.; Vol. III, Part 3 (second series): The Expansion of the Greek World, Eighth to Sixth Centuries B.C.; Vol. IV (first series): The Persian Empire and the West; Vol. IV (second series): Persia, Greece and the Western Mediterranean c.525-479 B.C.; Vol. V (first series): Athens 478-401 B.C.; Vol. V (second series): The Fifth Century B.C.; Vol. VI (first series): Macedon 401-301 B.C.; Vol. VI (second series): The Fourth Century B.C.; Vol. VII (first series): The Hellenistic Monarchies and the Rise of Rome; Vol. VII, Part 1 (second series): The Hellenistic World; Vol. VII, Part 2 (second series): The Rise of Rome to 220 B.C.; Vol. VIII (first series): Rome and the Mediterranean 218-133 B.C.; Vol. VIII (second series): Rome and the Mediterranean to 133 B.C.; Vol. IX (first series): The Roman Republic 133-44 B.C.; Vol. X (first series): The Augustan Empire 44 B.C.-A.D. 70; Vol. XI (first series): The Imperial Peace A.D. 70-192; Vol. XII (first series): The Imperial Crisis and Recovery A.D. 193-324; Plates to Vols.
