THE NEW POCKET DICTIONARY OF THE FRENCH AND ENGLISH LANGUAGES. In Two Parts. I. French and English. II. English and French. Containing All Words of general Use, and authorized by the best Writers. As Also Distinguishing the several Parts of Speech, with the Gender of Nouns in the French Language. To which are added, The Accents of the English Words, for the Use of Foreigners; and an Alphabetical List of the most common Christian Names, with their Significations from the original Languages. Carefully compiled from the most approved Dictionaries, French and English, particularly from that of the Royal Academy at Paris.

Fourth edition. Square 12mo. Contemporary full calf, ruled in gilt to the spine and with contrasting red morocco label with the title in gilt. A very good copy, the binding firm with a slight lean and a little wear to the corners and the head and tail of the spine. The contents with a little spotting to the prelims, the contemporary inscription and neat stamp of Joannis Darcel to the title page, a couple of little holes to the endpapers near the inner hinge, and occasional creasing to a few pages are otherwise in good order. A pleasing, tactile example.

This fourth edition contains 'some Thousand Words' extra, 'besides a very large Addition of Names and Places' and 'a list of Naval and Military Terms, in French and English, for the Use of Officers: By J.S. Charrier, French Master to the Royal Academy, Portsmouth'. An early edition of this important dictionary by the travel writer Nugent, whose popular works provided indispensable guidance for those embarking on 'the Grand Tour' of Europe. Provenance: From the library of Martin Stone.
