New edition. Contemporary full green morocco binding by Bickers & Son, Leicester Square. Five raised bands, titles in gilt to spine, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers. All edges gilt, with a well-executed erotic painting to the fore-edge depicting a scene in a regency bedroom with two women and a man. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine. The contents are clean and bright throughout and free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. The fore-edge painting is slightly dulled with age, but remains clear and the colours good.
An amusing riposte to Smiles's "bible of mid-Victorian liberalism" promoting thrift, self-improvement and moral-uprightness. Provenance: From the library of Martin Stone.
