MR. and MRS. CACKLE

Original pen and ink drawing on paper. Mounted. Image size 36 x 30 cms. Signed twice by Louis Wain in black ink with an additional six lines of text in the artist's hand (in pencil). Almost certainly drawn for a magazine such as the Illustrated London News or one of the Louis Wain annuals, with printer's notes underneath the mount. The drawing is in two halves, the first is a picture of Mr and Mrs Cackle, two ducks (in hats) and a very large egg. The second picture shows the egg hatched and lots of little ducklings running out. The text over the first image reads "Oh dear, what a big egg! You did not lay that Mrs Cackle surely. Yes I did Mr Cackle but it's grown up of its own accord in the night. What a big duckling we shall have". Under the second image reads "Oh dear, there is a whole brood of ducklings coming out of one egg. Mrs Cackle you must have laid an Easter egg by mistake".
