First edition, first printing. Original pictorial paper-covered pictorial boards. Illustrated with line drawings by Pauline Baynes throughout. A very good copy, the binding firm with a little bumping, the lightly faded spine a touch rolled and rubbed at the edges. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps.

The fragile nature of the binding on the first edition means that most copies suffer from heavy wear and scuffing. In later printings the binding colour was changed to incorporate a white spine and panel edges with a heavier lamination to prevent the wear issues of the first. (Hammond & Anderson A9a).
