THE POEMS OF ARTHUR HUGH CLOUGH

First edition, first printing. Original blue cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth and gilt sharp, the contents clean throughout. A little softened to the lower spine tip. Very light spotting to the upper edge of the page block, with just a few spots to the fore-edge. Lower edges untrimmed. In the crisp, clean dustwrapper, with just a touch of wear to spine tips. Not price-clipped, the publisher's 45/- net sticker covering the original price. A lovely copy. Scarce in the dustwrapper.

Until this edition emerged, the most substantial collection of Clough's poems had been prepared by the poet's wife (assisted by John Addington Symonds) and published in 1869, eight years after Clough's death at the age of 42. The present edition, based on a fresh collation of the manuscripts, restores and corrects a number of omissions and revisions made by earlier editors. The aim was to make all the poems available as Clough himself would have printed them. All variant readings are recorded in the substantial notes provided.
