First edition, first printing. Original vellum backed paper covered boards with titles lettered in black to the spine. A very good copy, the binding firm with a little spotting to the vellum. The contents with the trace of a removed tipped-in previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, a small mark to the margin of one text page, and a little toning to the endpapers are otherwise clean throughout and free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. A nice example.
Two important essays by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson, the founder of the Doves Press, expounding his Arts and Crafts ideals, including "The Book Beautiful", which argues for an understanding of the book as a holistic object made up of various arts (literature, illustration, printing, binding) that should work together to constitute a "wholeness, symmetry, harmony" - i.e. the ideal "Book Beautiful". Provenance: from the library of Martin Stone.
