Printed paper ticket bearing the emblem of the Assemblée nationale, stating "Tribune. Cour du Manege. Séance du soir, Mardi trois Mai 1791. Bon pour une personne", and with decorative woodcut borders. The ticket is a little delicate with separation to the vertical central fold (3cm at the foot and 1cm at the head) and some small loss to the corners caused by previous removal from an album, but is otherwise in good order.
A rare survival from the early years of the French Revolution, granting the bearer access to the debating chambers of the governing body of France during its period of constitutional monarchy. Established following the Estates General of May 1789 and the Tennis Court Oath of 20th June, the National Constituent Assembly served as the political debating chamber and legislative executive of France until its dissolution in September 1791, drafting the nation's first written constitution. The present ticket is for the evening session of the assembly on Tuesday 3rd May 1791, less than two weeks before it granted Black citizens of French colonies equal rights.
