Second edition. Contemporary tan calf binding with gilt titles to the spine, a gilt border to the boards, and gilt decoration to the board edges. Marbled endpapers. A good only copy, the upper board detached cleanly at the hinge, the rest of the binding sound. The contents have two previous owners' inscriptions to the front free endpaper and title pages dated in the the early 1800s, very light, infrequent pencil notes throughout from a similar time period, water marking to the bottom third of the pages, and a few mark thoughout.

William Godwin's first book, published anonymously. Godwin's own musings on politics are interspersed throughout the biography. Provenance: from the library of Martin Stone.
