FRENCH LINE ENGRAVINGS OF THE LATE XVIII CENTURY

Limited edition of 1050 copies, this being number 653. Large quarto. Publisher's original purple watered silk with decorative gilt frame and titles to the upper board and titles in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper and with original card box. Gilt to top edge, the rest untrimmed. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 81 fine engraved plates on laid watermarked paper. A very good copy, the binding bright and square, although, as is usual with this book, the gutta percha has perished and the pages are loose. The contents with toning to the endpapers and a little offsetting from the plates to the facing blank pages are otherwise clean throughout and free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. The original plain dustwrapper has a 3 inch tear to the front panel at the front flap join, but else is in very good condition. The original card box is worn with tears and separation. An unusually complete copy of this work, with its dustwrapper and box. The binding is visually superb and the plates are especially bright.

A beautifully produced catalogue raisoné of late eighteenth-century French engraving. Provenance: From the library of Martin Stone.
