A FEW LATE CHRYSANTHEMUMS

First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Original blue cloth with pale yellow paper label printed in black to the upper board, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the contents bright clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. A few light spots to the top and fore-edges of the page block. Complete with the lightly toned, marked and spotted (more visible to the verso) dustwrapper, which is a little rubbed to spine tips and extremities. Not price-clipped and correctly priced (9s. 6d. net) to the front flap. An attractive copy.

Signed by Betjeman in blue ink to the front free endpaper. There's a neatly written pencil note to the front pastedown stating that the book was 'Signed September 6th 1967 at 43. Cloth Fair EC1'. This is the Georgian house, overlooking the churchyard of St Bartholomew the great, which was the poet's home between 1954 and 1973 (now owned by The Landmark Trust and available to book for holidays). One of Betjeman's finest, and saddest, books; divided into three sections marked 'Medium', 'Gloom' and 'Light'. 6151 copies printed. (Peterson A21a).
