First edition in English, first printing. Publisher's original orange cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the Leonard Rosoman illustrated dustwrapper. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, dusty and spotted to the closed text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the near fine, lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper that is has a strip of toning to the top edge of the rear panel. Not price-clipped (18s on the front flap).

A collection of short stories which paint a picture of daily life in a provincial Italian town against the backdrop of post-war fascism. First published in Italy in 1956 'Cinque storie ferraresi' was awarded the Premio Strega [Strega Prize] in the same year.
