A TALE OF TWO CITIES

First edition, first printing. Bound from the original parts. Nineteenth century half calf, five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments and titles in gilt on a red morocco label to the spine. All edges marbled. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, vignette title page and 14 addition plates throughout the text by H. K. Browne. Short closed tear to the blank margin of p.31. Without publisher's catalogue as noted in some copies. An attractive copy, the binding square and firm and the gilt bright, the board and spine edges with light rubbing. The contents with a 1934 gift inscription to the blank front endpaper are otherwise clean and bright throughout.

With all of the internal flaws present throughout the text identifying the first issue noted in Smith, including the uncorrected pagination misprinting '113' on page 213, however the list of plates omits the signature 'b'. (Smith, part 1: 13).
