First edition, first printing. Three volumes. Publisher's original floral paper covered boards, blue cloth spine with titles in gilt. 8vo. Half titles to all three volumes. A very good copy, the bindings firm with some rubbing and a little surface paper loss to the board corners, the spine tips a little bumped, the blue cloth and gilt bright. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages. Spotting to the prelims and occasionally to the margins throughout. An attractive example.
The author's third, and to many of her reviewers, best novel and the first to appear under her own name. A sensation novel with New Woman elements, the plot twisting with skulduggery, illegitimacy and murder in high society. Diana Tempest was an immediate success, going into three editions in nine months and remaining in print throughout the author's lifetime. (Sadleir 550; Wolff 1212).
