First edition. Three volumes. Finely bound in late nineteenth / early twentieth century full brown morocco by Birdsall, Northampton. Five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments and titles in gilt to the spines. Upper and lower boards triple ruled in gilt. Inner dentelles elaborately decorated in gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Original half title retained in volume lll, half titles in volumes l and ll an inserted facsimile of volume lll. Publisher's advert to the verso of the last page of text in volume lll. A very attractive example, the bindings sound with a little rubbing at the extremities, the contents with some toning and spotting to the margins throughout are otherwise clean throughout.
The fourth and final novel to be published in Jane Austen's lifetime. Following unsatisfactory contract negotiations with John Murray, it was printed and marketed at the author's own expense allowing her to retain copyright and pay only a small 10% commission to the publisher. The first edition of 2000 copies was in bookshops on the 29th December 1815. (Gilson, A8)
