First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author. Publisher's original turquoise cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. An excellent very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth fresh. The contents are clean throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that is faded to the red lettering on the spine. Not price-clipped ($5.00 net to the lower front flap).

Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front free endpaper "For Bill Gray / with my best wishes / Christopher Isherwood / May 22 1966". Further inscribed underneath "For Bill from Mike 10 July '66 - / When you have nothing better to do you / can dig up this book and find pleasure". The recipient is Dr William "Woods" Shelton Gray, Jr (1926-1993), Professor and the Chair of the English Department at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia specialising in modern English and American Literature. Educated in America and England he established correspondence and relationships with a number of English and American writers and poets, most notably T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden (who dedicated his poem "The Aliens" to him) and Tennessee Williams.
