Limited edition, special issue. Number 59 of 100 copies (from a total edition of 500), specially bound and containing one extra engraving. Signed by Buckland Wright in blue ink to the limitation page. Original full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with purple onlays and decorative gilt panels designed by the artist to the upper and lower boards. The spine with five raised bands and titles in gilt. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. In the original red cloth slipcase. Illustrated with 16 wood-engravings by Buckland Wright, plus the extra plate (17 in total). A lovely near-fine copy, the binding square and tight with just minor rubbing to the extremities. The contents with a little toning to the textblock edge are otherwise clean and fresh throughout and remain free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. The slipcase with a little rubbing and marking is otherwise in very good order. A bright and attractive copy.
The superbly produced Golden Cockerel Press edition of the best-known work of the American fantasy fiction author James Branch Cabell. The subject of a celebrated obscenity trial shortly after publication, "Jurgen" tells the story of a "monstrous clever fellow" who embarks on a journey through ever more fantastic realms, even to hell and heaven, everywhere seducing the local women, including the devil's own wife. A handsome example of the scarce special issue.
