The Polish philosopher's critically acclaimed analysis of Marxist thought, written between 1968 and 1976, at a time when it was impossible to publish the work in Communist ruled Poland. First published in France by the Institut Littéraire between 1976 and 1978, this first edition in English, translated by P. S. Falla, was published by the Oxford University Press in 1978. Due to his criticism of Marxism and Communism, Kolakowski was effectively exiled from Poland in 1968. He spent most of the remainder of his career at All Souls College in Oxford.
