First edition, first printing. Original pale brown cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in the dustwrapper designed by Alan Tunbridge. Top edge red. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents bright and clean without inscriptions or stamps. There is a small patch of light rubbing to the lower spine tip. In the dustwrapper which, apart from a half-centimetre area of creasing to the upper spine tip, is fine and bright. Not price-clipped (3.25 net to the front flap). A very attractive copy.

Burgess's extraordinary fusion of musical and literary form, part historical novel, part symphony. "People who know a lot about Napoleon and a lot about music as well will spot or explain a good deal that others may miss. I hope they don't make it seem laborious. [...] He is writing very serious comedy and doing it with extraordinary resource, variety and pace." (Frank Kermode in 'The Guardian', September 26, 1974). (Brewer A22).
