Illustrated throughout with a black and white portrait frontispiece, 22 plates (two folding), illustrations in text throughout and a fold out campaign map to the rear. A ery good copy, the binding square and firm, with a little bumping to the spine ends, the cloth with some fading to the spine and numerous small residue marks across the upper and rear board. The contents with a few light tape marks to the pastedowns are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps.

An account of Romolo Gessi's (1831- 1881) exploration of the course of the White Nile in Sudan and Uganda under the orders of General Charles Gordon, who would subsequently task the Italian soldier with the suppression of slave traders in South Sudan.
