SHIGARAKI ANCIENT CERAMICS EXHIBITION CATALOGUE

First edition, first printing. Bernard Leach's copy, initialled and inscribed by him to the front cover. Publisher's original stapled card wrappers with French flaps. Japanese text. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs, plus two in colour. A very good copy, the binding firm with some toning, rusting to the staples and a few splash marks to the rear cover. The contents with some toning to page edges are otherwise in very good order and clean throughout.

An illustrated exhibition catalogue of ancient Japanese Shigaraki ceramics, owned by Bernard Leach, the father of British studio pottery. Leach had a intense interest in Shigaraki ware, as well as in the Japanese tea ceremony in which it was commonly used, sending several examples back to England whilst on his formative travels through the country in 1915. Leach's study of Japanese ceramics led to a life-long fascination and fundamentally served to shape the development of his own craft and artistic ideals. An appealing association copy.
