First Danish edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Contemporary half green morocco over green cloth with five raised bands and titles in gilt to the spine. Publisher's original front and rear wrappers retained and bound in. The binding is in fine condition, square and firm. The contents, with a little toning to the edges of the paper stock and wear to the edges of the front and rear wrappers, are otherwise clean throughout.
Inscribed by the author in black ink on the half title "For P. Saugman / from Graham Greene / Copenhagen. Sept '50". The basis for the 1944 film of the same name starring Ray Milland and Marjorie Reynolds. The recipient, Per Saugman was a bookseller and publisher who built Blackwell Scientific Publications into the top medical and scientific publishing house of his generation. As a bookseller he worked closely with Richard Blackwell, chairing Blackwell North America, three of the major UK Blackwell shops (Hartley Seed, Parry's and George's) and Munksgaard, which the Blackwell companies had bought (on Saugman's advice) in 1963. He served as a governor of Oxford Polytechnic, the Dragon school and Headington school in Oxford and set up the Sunningwell School of Art. Unusually, was a fellow of two Oxford colleges, Green and St Cross.
