First edition, first printing thus. Two volumes. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in dustwrappers. Both volumes fine and apparently unread, the bindings tight and square, the contents clean and without inscriptions or stamps. Both volumes have a small patch of shelf-dust to the lower outside edges of the page block. The dustwrappers are immaculate except for a tiny nick to the tip of the first volume's spine. Both volumes have been repriced to the front flaps with the publisher's own label (£5.20 net.), the first affixed over the original price, the second beside the neatly clipped corner. A near immaculate set. Quite scarce in this condition.
First published in 1895 and exploring the origins of English common law and society, Pollock and Maitland's work (largely the work of the latter) "was recognised at once as a masterpiece and has since been accepted as one of the great histories in the English language" (from the jacket). This reissue, based on the 1898 Second Edition, includes a substantial new introduction and bibliography.
