First edition, first printing. Original green cloth with gilt lettering to spines, in dustwrappers, with a portfolio (identically bound) enclosing seven loose folded maps. A fine, bright set, apparently unread, the bindings tight and square, the contents clean and without marks or inscriptions. There is a half-centimetre spot of shelf-dust to the lower outside edge of each volume, otherwise immaculate. In the fine dustwrappers, showing the merest shelf-wear. Not price-clipped, each volume priced to the front flap ('3 Vols. and Maps £14 14s. net'). A superb set.
A monumental feat of scholarship. 'It is a mine of information on State and Church alike [...] (the notes provided in vol. iii alone are absolutely invaluable), and the magnificent seven maps provided in the folder will be indispensable for all future students of the empire in this period' (C. W. Dugmore, 'The Journal of Ecclesiastical History', Vol. 16:2, October 1965).
