Publisher's original red cloth, stamped in blind to the upper and lower boards and with titles in gilt to the spine, in the Richard Mantel illustrated dustwrapper. Illustrated with full page plates in colour by Roswitha Quadflieg. Text printed in red and green. A lovely very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the very lightly rubbed, price-clipped dustwrapper that is otherwise without fading, loss or tears.

This copy was evidently retailed in the UK as there is a British price label to the rear panel. First published in German in 1979. This first English translation was published simultaneously in New York by Doubleday and in London by Allen Lane. A magical fantasy tale which formed the basis for the 1984 cult classic film of the same name.
