THE OXFORD IBSEN: Complete, Volumes I-VIII.

First edition, first printing. Eight Volumes. Original green cloth with gilt lettering to spines (the author's name gilt on red), in dustwrappers. A very good to fine set, all volumes tight and square, seemingly unread, the contents clean without inscriptions or stamps. The earliest four volumes (VI, V, II, IV; the set wasn't published in numerical order) are significantly spotted to the long edges of the page block; this doesn't , however, spread (beyond the occasional millimetre or two) to the pages themselves. The later volumes show hardly any spotting. The fine, unclipped dustwrappers (variously priced 25s-10.50) are generally clean, bright and unfaded. Vol. VI (the earliest) is a little toned, with a few light marks to the front panel; Vol. I shows some spotting to the outer edge of the rear flap. A superb example of this groundbreaking set, still the standard edition of Ibsen's works in English. Scarce complete, more so in dustwrappers.

'The only uniform collection in English of all the plays, [it] fills a gap that had yawned as wide as the great Ginnungagap, that mythic emptiness stretching from the world of the north. From that void the corpus of the giant Henrik Ibsen has now emerged fully formed and living under the creative eduction of Professor McFarlane' (from Sandra Saari's review of the final volume, 'Modern Drama', Vol. 21:4, 1978)
