THE POSTHUMOUS PAPERS OF THE PICKWICK CLUB

First edition in book form. Full polished calf by Morrell, London with the publisher's original cloth retained and bound in at the rear. Five raised bands, elaborately decorated compartments and titles in gilt on green and red morocco labels to the spine. Gilt ruled and decorated boards, board edges and inner dentelles. Top edge gilt. 8vo. Half title, engraved frontispiece, vignette title and 41 plates [43 in total, as called for]. "Weller" vignette title page (no priority established in book form) and the two suppressed plates by R. W. Buss replaced with those by Phiz on the author's instruction (here present opposite pages 73 and 77). All 7 Seymour plates are present as called for and the Phiz plates are in the later state with captions and Chapman and Hall imprint, without page numbers. The text with several but not all first state points, relevant only to copies in parts. The binding is fine, square and firm. The contents with the occasional finger mark or foxing spots to the margin and a few corners repaired at the time of binding (not affecting the text) are otherwise clean throughout. A very attractive example.
