First edition, first printing. Original red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in dustwrapper. A fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth and gilt bright, the contents clean without inscriptions or stamps. Minor bump to the lower outer rear corner. The dustwrapper, except for a little bumping to the rear lower corner and a 3 mm patch of abrasion to the outer fold of the front panel, is unusually fine and bright. Not price-clipped (publisher's 18s net label to the front flap). A lovely, bright copy.

Translated from the French by Bernard Frechtman. 'The Screens' is Genet's dramatic masterpiece, formally elaborate, boldly political (the work was Genet's response to the Algerian War of Independence). The work, in abridged form, was given its premiere in Berlin in 1961. Its first complete performance took place in Stockholm in 1964.
