First edition, first printing. Publisher's original maroon cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Comical black and white frontispiece depicting the 'bibliofiends' by Oliver Herford. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with some spotting to the boards. The contents with a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown and a little spotting to the text-block edge, are otherwise clean throughout. Also included are several press cuttings relating to its publication, Rosenbach, and the rare book world during the 1920s. A nice group.

The only published work of fiction by the great book collector and dealer, known variously as 'The Greatest Bookdealer in the World', 'The Napoleon of Books', and 'The Terror of the Auction Room'. Consisting of eleven mystery stories, it charts the life of the fictional Robert Hooker, a bibliophile, who, shunned by high society for his lack of money, takes revenge by tricking the rich out of their rare and valuable tomes.
