THE WORKS OF ROBERT BURNS. With a series of authentic pictorial illustrations, marginal glossary, numerous notes, and appendixes: Also, The Life of Burns, by J.G. Lockhart; and Essays on the Genius, Character, and Writings of Burns, by Thomas Carlyle and Professor Wilson.

First edition thus. Five volumes. Handsomely bound by the publisher in half brown calf over blue pebble-grained cloth boards, ruled in gilt to the upper and lower panels. With blind stamped decoration, contrasting red labels with titles and volume numbers in gilt and lighter toned gilt decorated strips to the head and foot of the spines. Binder's ticket at the rear of each volume. Marbling to all page edges. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 57 fine full page steel engraved plates. An excellent near-fine set, the bindings square and firm with minor wear and bumping to the extremities. The contents with a few dots of foxing to page edges and minor offsetting from the plates are otherwise clean throughout and free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. The engraved plates remain remarkably fresh, with deep, rich impressions.

A superb set of Burns's works, beautifully illustrated and in an extremely attractive and unusual publisher's binding.
