UNDER MILK WOOD: A Play For Voices.

First edition, first printing. Publisher's original brown cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a touch of rubbing to spine tips and corners. The cloth, with a small mark (c. 1 cm) to the upper edge of the front panel and a minor area of discolouration at the lower edge of the rear hinge is otherwise bright and fresh. Complete with the bright dustwrapper, a little rubbed to spine tips and the upper corner of the front panel. Light toning to the verso and inner flaps. Vertical dark mark (c. 3.5 cm) and a couple of light surface marks to the front panel. Not price-clipped (8s 6d net to the upper front flap). An attractive example.

Under Milk Wood was commissioned for the BBC Third Programme and broadcast posthumously on 25 January 1954. Thomas' final work, an evocation of the lives and thoughts of the inhabitants of a fictional Welsh fishing town, very soon became his most famous, and one of the most loved (and adapted) works of post-war British literature. 6,400 copies of the first impression were issued on 5th March 1954. By the time of the seventh impression in May 1955, 53,700 copies had been printed. (Rolph B.21).
