First edition, first printing. Inscribed presentation copy. Publisher's original grey cloth with blue titles to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. A very good or better copy, the binding firm with a little bumping at the spine tips. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. The cheap wartime paper is toned to the text block edge. Complete with the near very good rubbed and nicked dustwrapper which has small chips at the tips of the darkened spine. Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front endpaper "To Joan from Jimmy 12.11.40 [underlined]". The recipient is Joan Farjeon, wife of Herbert Farjeon with whom the author collaborated. Hornsell was known as Jimmy to his friends. (Bleiler).
