First edition, first printing. Inscribed presentation copy, with a pencil sketch. Original limp vellum with gilt titles and decoration to the upper cover. Top edge gilt, all other edges untrimmed. A very good copy, the vellum covers a little bowed or warped, lacking the original ribbon ties. The contents are bright and clean throughout.
Inscribed by the authors in sepia ink to the front free endpaper, reading "To Mr Henry Savage Landor / with the best wishes of / Sarita and Frances Ward / Paris / Dec. 1910", with a pencil sketch of a figure underneath, possibly in the hand of the painter and explorer recipient, Arnold Henry Savage Landor. A lovely book filled with sometimes tragic, always sweet poems and short stories about fairies, flowers, and nature. Sarita and Frances Ward were the daughters of Herbert Ward, the sculptor and explorer, and moved in wealthy society and artistic circles. Sarita was a 1911 debutante, and both women later married British diplomats. Provenance: From the library of Martin Stone.
