The author's second novel, a prequel to Patternmaster, and the second book in her Patternist series (which spanned five books and concluded in 1984). Octavia Butler won multiple Hugo and Nebula awards and was known, with the exploration of race and sex that is common in her work, for expanding the genre of science fiction to include themes, as well as readers, and writers, that were hitherto rare in what was previously an overwhelmingly white and male dominated field.
