First edition. Publisher's original brown cloth with gilt titles and decorations to the spine and upper board, with an illustration from The Red Shoes mounted on the upper board. Gold endpapers. Top edge gilt, all other edges untrimmed. Containing 30 wonderful colour illustration plates by Katherine Cameron. A very good copy, the binding firm and square, the extremities and spine a little rubbed, with some staining to the lower board, though the beautiful upper board remains clean and bright. The contents, with a previous owner's tiny inscription to the half title and some light foxing to the prelims, are otherwise clean throughout.
A collection of classic fairy tales illustrated by the Scottish artist Katherine Cameron who studied at the Glasgow School of Art and was a member of The Glasgow Society of Lady Artists. It is possible that the previous owner, 'Serena Lumley', who has neatly inscribed her name on the half title, is Lady Serena James (1901-2000, born Lady Serena Lumley), the only child of the 10th Earl of Scarborough. She settled in Richmond and became a well known and loved in North Yorkshire as a philanthropist and local character.
