First edition, first printing. The publisher's retained copy. Publisher's original dark green cloth with titles in gilt to the spine and 'file' embossed to the upper board. Illustrated in black and white with numerous in-text figures. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm with a couple of small areas of minor bubbling to the cloth to the upper and lower boards and with a little bumping to the extremities. The contents are clean and bright throughout and remain free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps.

A key work by the influential American botanist Douglas Houghton Campbell (1859-1953), which went on to become a standard botany textbook. Campbell was a leading plant morphologist and one of the fifteen founding professors at Stanford University, serving as the first head of its Botany department.
