First edition. Publisher's original green cloth boards, with gilt titles and illustrations to the spine and front board. Illustrated throughout in black and white. Four fold out facsimile maps and letter. A better than very good copy, the binding tight and square, with bumping and rubbing to the spine ends, board edges and corners and a perforation to the middle of the spine. The contents, with foxing to the early and late pages, with lighter foxing throughout and a bookplate to the front pastedown are otherwise clean and free from inscriptions or stamps. Foxing and tears (without loss) to both of the large fold out maps at the rear.

A thorough biography of Sir Joseph Banks, his travels to Newfoundland, Iceland and voyages with Captain James Cook. Also covering his work as director of scientific operations at Kew Garden and as a botanist, in which he amassed an extensive Herbarium, with it becoming the foundation of The British Museums General Herbarium.
