THE GREAT APE PROJECT: Equality Beyond Humanity.

First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the authors to Jon Wynne-Tyson. Publisher's original laminated pictorial card covers. Includes a group of press reviews etc loosely laid in. A very good copy, the binding square and tight with a little rubbing to the extremities, a couple of light creases to the spine, and minor bumping to the spine ends. The contents with a few tiny marks to the textblock edge are otherwise in very good order and clean throughout.

Inscribed by Singer in black ink to the title page "For Jon, / In appreciation of all you have / done to extend equality beyond / humanity, / Peter Singer / 12.6.93", and by Cavalieri to the verso of the half title "With many thanks / for what you are doing / Paola (C.)". Edited by Singer, the author of "Animal Liberation", and Cavalieiri, an Italian philosopher concerned with the extension of human rights to other animals, the present volume "argues for the extension of the basic ideal of equality to include all the apes: chimpanzees, gorilla and orang-utans, as well as humans". Containing thirty-four diverse essays from authors including Jane Goodall, Richard Dawkins, and Douglas Adams, it seeks to present "a highly persuasive case for a complete reassessment of the moral status of our closest kin". The first edition was only released in paperback. The recipient of the present copy, the writer and publisher Jon Wynne-Tyson (1924-2020), was himself a tireless campaigner for animal rights. A nice association copy.
