First edition. Signed by the illustrator. Trade issue. Publisher's original cream cloth boards with intricate gilt illustrations, decorations and titles to the spine and upper board. With 12 gorgeous colour plates by E. J. Detmold, each with its own lettered tissue guard. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, gilt bright the boards with a few minor indentations and the cloth with some light marks. The contents have have some foxing early and late and occasionally throughout, as well as some spotting to the text block edges. All illustrations are present as called for in in fine condition, complete with all of the tissue guards, a few of which are a little spotted or lightly creased.

Signed by Edward Julius Detmold in black ink to the half title. A beautifully produced and illustrated book. Issued simultaneously in a trade edition and a signed and numbered limited edition of 100 copies. This example is the regular trade issue that has been signed, possibly for presentation by the illustrator. Rare thus.
